Welcome to Shorelines Arts Festival 2021, a different festival, but promising a live weekend of art, music, literature and drama to nurture us after a long hibernation. In continuing with a Festival for 2021, Shorelines is keeping the lights on the festival stage for our artists, performers, audience, community and volunteers, to bring joy and rekindle our community spirit.
With over 30 events in four days, many of which are free of charge, and a variety of visual art exhibitions, we present the fruits of projects we developed during the year and are delighted to also provide our schools with a limited programme of events. Please note that tickets for all events, free or ticketed, must be booked online at shorelinesartsfestival.com. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, audience capacity at venues will be severely reduced. It is regrettable that many who wish to be present at our events will not be able to attend this year due to the reduced number of tickets available. Seating capacity is limited and no patrons will be admitted without a valid ticket. All patrons for any indoor event must be fully vaccinated and are requested to present their Covid Certificate at the entrance to the event. We ask all patrons to wear a facemask when attending each event. Venues and times are subject to change due to COVID-19 Restrictions. We hope you will walk the art trail, join in the sensory experience, manage to get a ticket for many of the free events as well as the concerts, readings and workshops we have planned for you. The programme for this year’s festival will be online at the end of this week with live events that reflect the current COVID restrictions and guidelines. The aim is to bring live music, words and art to our community and schools. This year, all tickets will have to be booked online for all events and there will be limited capacity at these concerts as per the current restrictions.
Performers this year include singers, traditional music, classical music, folk and contemporary performers. We hope to give our local musicians like Knoeline Keane, Tríona Eames, Dave Gradwell and Laura Browne opportunities for live performances at pop up outdoor venues. We are also collaborating with Ceol an tSamhraidh to bring larger capacity events and free music to our loyal audiences. Literary guests include Nuala O’Connor, Louise Kennedy, Berni Crawford, David Butler and Madeline Darcy as well as local readers at the Only for This Exhibition with commissioned original work from writers Donal Ryan, James Harpur, Geraldine Mills, Stephen James Smith and Geraldine Mitchell. The Visual Arts programme at Shorelines 2021 includes our first Shorelines Windows Exhibition where a stroll through the streets becomes a stroll through an outdoor art gallery. Our Windows Arts Trail will include works from Josephine Geaney, Emma Barone, Abby Dillon, Caroline Evans, Mary Finn, Julie Potter, Claire Finlay, Michelle Ryan and Jenny Wood-Sullivan who is also curator of this visual treat. Portumna Arts Group & Shorelines Arts Festival present the first in a new series of podcasts produced by Kate Gibbs. The first in the series celebrates St. Patrick's Days of the past. As you are all aware, the usual Shorelines programme of packed events, art exhibitions, workshops and general fun cannot happen this year. However, to mark the festival weekend planned back in December, Portumna Arts Group host a Culture Night Event on Friday, 18th September.
Notes from Silence & Words from Stone, will take place at 9pm in Portumna Town Hall (note the venue and time change from the Culture Night Galway Events page). To book tickets for this free event, reserve them online at www.shorelinesartsfestival.com where they will be available from Tuesday, September 8th at 7pm (note the limit of 2 tickets per booking max). Tickets for this event are strictly limited as the overall venue capacity (including performers and organizers) is 50 people, to comply with Covid-19 guidelines. The event includes music and readings with guest musicians, Ger Fahy, David McEntee, Manus McGuire & Darren de Burca who will be joined by members of Portumna Pen Pushers in a celebration of spoken word and live music. Shorelines acknowledges the support of Culture Night and Galway County Council Arts Office. Doors open at 9pm sharp and the event finishes at 10.30pm. All required safety precautions will be taken and attendees are requested to wear face coverings. We regret to say that it is with a heavy heart that we are cancelling the planned 2020 Shorelines Arts Festival in September. Consideration was given to alternative dates and venues, deliberation was undertaken on the logistics and protocols to ensure public safety and eventually the decision to cancel the festival was unanimously taken. We still hope to mark the weekend in a visual way in the community so keep an eye out for additions to the art trail we work on each year.
The committee thanks the hard work and dedication of Joan Gordon and Shane Duffy who stepped aside on committee this year. And a big welcome on board is extended to Anna Geelan and Lisa Keane. So to all our friends, sponsors, audiences and followers as well as our performers and venue providers, stay safe and well and let’s all mind each other so we can celebrate together in September 2021. Following on from our most successful festival to date, we are pleased to announce the dates for the 2020 festival, our 13th. It will take place from 17-20 September, 2020 and promises to be another feast of the arts across multiple strands. Preparations are already well underway with the initial ideas and plans for the 2020 programme being discussed by the team. Check back here over the coming weeks and months for further updates.
With the 12th Shorelines Arts Festival in the rearview mirror, the 2nd season of Shorelines Film Nights returns on Tuesday, 8th October with the screening of Wild Rose. The film tells the story of Rose, a single mother of two, fresh out of jail, whose dream is to leave Glasgow and make it as a country singer in Nashville. We return to our usual venue of The Dock at The Boathouse Bar and, as last year, the season will run for 6 months with monthly screenings of a variety of interesting, contemporary films from a variety of countries. Each film will commence at 8 PM and admission remains €5 at the door. We look forward to seeing you there!
He was nominated for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 for his debut, The Spinning Heart, and again in 2018, for his fourth novel, From A Low And Quiet Sea. His work has been adapted for stage and screen and translated into over twenty languages. The Spinning Heart was voted Irish Book of the Decade in 2016 in a nationwide poll run by Dublin Book Festival. His sixth book, Strange Flowers, will be published worldwide in Spring 2020. Donal lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Limerick.
The glorious river Shannon will provide a picturesque backdrop for ‘Folk on the Boat’ on Sunday afternoon, on board the Ku-Ee-Tu. Join us for 90 minutes on this river cruise with recitals of spoken word by Geraldine Mitchell and music by the U.S. group Betty & the Baby Boomers. Sheer bliss on the water, what better way to spend your Sunday afternoon?
Shorelines will welcome their first harpsichord to the Festival this weekend in a special performance by Ensemble Revelare on Sunday at 6pm at Christ Church. This performance will take you on a musical tour of the 16th century and feature soprano Aisling Kenny. The programme includes Telemann, Bach, Handel and Purcell in this hour of song and music on period instruments such as the recorder, the harpsichord and the cello. Some events have sold out and tickets are limited, check availability at ShorelinesArtsFestival.com #ShorelinesArts As expected, the Scullion concert in Christ Church on Friday, 20 September @ 8pm is now SOLD OUT. As one of the headline events at Shorelines 2019, the highly anticipated concert has sold out well in advance. Tickets for all other events continue to sell quickly. To avoid disappointment secure your tickets for these remaining events as soon as possible.
