The Nicholas Treacy Memorial Recitation Competition

Our annual Recitation Competition in memory of Nicholas Treacy, a much-loved member of Portumna’s Maple Poetry Group who passed away in November 2010. In his lifetime, Nicholas learned hundreds of poems and recited them frequently at many readings, occasions and visits. To revitalise this dying art of learning by heart and to honour his memory, the winner will be awarded the Nicholas Treacy Perpetual Memorial Prize.
Judge: Anne Marie Kennedy, former winner of this event, current Baffle Bard is a writer and teacher with an M.A. in Creative Writing. Her radio drama 'A Matter of Modesty' won two Golds for RTE, in the NY Festival for International Radio Awards 2017. She features on RTE Radio’s Sunday Miscellany and Ear to the Ground as well as writing for publications including Irish Music Magazine and the Connacht Tribune.
Guidelines: 1. Entry is open to all over 16 years of age. 2. Entry fee of €5 is payable at the event. 3. Each entrant must recite ‘off by heart’ a poem previously published and written by another poet prior to 1935. 4. One recital per entrant. 5. Time limit - 6 minutes max. 6. Prompter will be available to assist - two copies of the poem to be presented to the committee by the entrant before the session begins. 7. Judging will be based on presentation, delivery, intonation and recall. The Judge’s decision will be final. 8. Register your entry by Sept 10th by e-mail or phone, stating name, contact number and name of poem.
