Manchán Magan’s recent best-selling book Thirty-Two Words For Field explores the insights the Irish language offers into the landscape, psyche and heritage of Ireland. He is so looking forward to returning to Portumna. Sunday, 19th Sept. at 2.30pm (60mins), Christ Church. Sarah Moore Fitzgerald, author and teacher moderates a literary hour that includes author, Nuala O’Connor whose recent novel Nora, is described as a “lively and loving paean to the indomitable Nora Barnacle” by Edna O’Brien. Joining them will be the short story writer Louise Kennedy, with her dazzling, heartbreaking debut short story collection, The End of the World Is a Cul de Sac. Not to be missed! Saturday , 18th Sept. at 4.30pm (60mins), Christ Church. Doire Press are hosting a reading from their many published writers. David Butler is the author of four novels including the award winning City of Dis, short story collections and poetry collections including All the Barbaric Glass. Madeleine D’arcy, a former Hennessy award winning writer, has a new short story collection Liberty Terrace due out shortly. Her writing is described as ‘funny and wry and pulsate with all the mad rude energies of life itself” (Kevin Barry) .Music too from Larks on the Lake who have penned a few new songs recently. Saturday, 18th Sept. at 12 noon (60mins), Christ Church. Poetry Appreciation Workshop Facilitator: David Butler Saturday, 18th Sept. at 2pm (90mins), An Gáirdín (Limited Numbers). Readings from poets Eleanor Hooker and Bernie Crawford with music from local group Larks on the Lake will be a joyful midday treat on Sunday. Eleanor’s poetry collections and chapbooks are infused with images, themes and tones that draw us into the water and wind of the world and mind. Bernie’s debut collection, Living Water, carries us along with a blend of humour, humanity and femininity. Sunday, 19th Sept. at 12 noon (60mins), Christ Church. For lovers of history, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara, who has carried out a phenomenal amount of research that resulted in his publication of The Scariff Martyrs: War, Murder and Memory in East Clare, will talk about his work on the deaths, a century ago, of the four men in Scariff and the subsequent trauma. Friday, 17th Sept. at 4.30pm (60mins), The Irish Workhouse Centre. Join local Portumna man, James Coughlan, author of a recent book on the only man to win All-Ireland Winners Medals for Galway in Hurling and Football. In Leonard McGrath: A Forgotten Gael, James takes a fascinating look at a man who excelled in many facets of life not only in sport but also in music and theatre. Friday , 17th Sept. at 6pm (60mins), The Irish Workhouse Centre. Visit the grounds of Portumna Castle and Portumna Forest Park to see the Exhibition of Photographs and Writings in the Shorelines Only for This project featuring commissioned poetry and prose from local writers and guest authors: Donal Ryan, Geraldine Mills, Stephen James Smith, Pat Boran, Geraldine Mitchell and James Harpur. A stunning portrait of responses in words and images to lockdown survival in the last year. In Portumna Castle’s Café Gallery, treat yourself to an exploration into the world of lace as interpreted by Portumna Pen Pushers in collaboration with the Headford Lace Project in their Bobbins and Pens Exhibition. Welcome to Shorelines Arts Festival 2021, a different festival, but promising a live weekend of art, music, literature and drama to nurture us after a long hibernation. In continuing with a Festival for 2021, Shorelines is keeping the lights on the festival stage for our artists, performers, audience, community and volunteers, to bring joy and rekindle our community spirit.
With over 30 events in four days, many of which are free of charge, and a variety of visual art exhibitions, we present the fruits of projects we developed during the year and are delighted to also provide our schools with a limited programme of events. Please note that tickets for all events, free or ticketed, must be booked online at shorelinesartsfestival.com. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, audience capacity at venues will be severely reduced. It is regrettable that many who wish to be present at our events will not be able to attend this year due to the reduced number of tickets available. Seating capacity is limited and no patrons will be admitted without a valid ticket. All patrons for any indoor event must be fully vaccinated and are requested to present their Covid Certificate at the entrance to the event. We ask all patrons to wear a facemask when attending each event. Venues and times are subject to change due to COVID-19 Restrictions. We hope you will walk the art trail, join in the sensory experience, manage to get a ticket for many of the free events as well as the concerts, readings and workshops we have planned for you.
