VISUAL ARTS AT SHORELINES 2022
Welcome to the visual arts section of our Shorelines website, where you will
find information about our outstanding visual arts programme for 2022.

A number of important and separate multi-strand exhibitions will take place this
year and the town also has several pieces of public art for you to appreciate.

The Gallery at the Workhouse

In the Gallery at the Workhouse, local artists will be given a chance to display a single piece in the Long Gallery.

In the Double Gallery, we will show the work of our two invited artists, Joan Finnegan and Conor Walton.

We are proud to announce that the very distinguished painter Conor Walton will present an
event in the gallery on Friday, 16th September and that is warmly recommended.

1845: Memento Mori is a famine memorial by glass artist Paula Stokes. (https://www.1845mementomori.com/).
It is an installation of 1,845 handblown glass potatoes remembering the Great Irish Famine. Visit the Dining Hall at the Centre for this unique memorial.

This is complemented by Kieran Tuohy’s Dark Shadows exhibition located in the Girls’ Schoolroom.
(https://irishworkhousecentre.ie/dark-shadows/). Each piece, carved in the medium of bog oak immortalizes the stories of our famine ancestors.

Portumna Castle Gallery

Our visual arts programme at Portumna Castle also includes work in the Castle Gallery adjacent to the café and in the
grounds of Portumna Castle. The main exhibition will focus on the basketwork and sculpture of the great Joe Hogan
and some impressive rushwork pieces from local artist Gerardine Wisdom.

In addition, there will be an exhibition of curated work by students of Portumna Community School and new writing from
Portumna Pen Pushers in response to images from photographer, Brendan Lawlor, will be displayed in the Castle grounds.

Keep an eye out for our main festival programme for other art projects in our schools, library and outdoor spaces.
