Earlier this year, mosaic artist Alison Mac Cormaic facilitated a community mosaic project with funding from Creative Ireland and Galway Co. Council. This project, Pattern for Portumna, is commissioned by Shorelines Arts Festival, under the umbrella of Portumna Arts Group and Youthreach Portumna. Alison led workshops with local groups: St Dympna’s Adult Day Service, Ability West Portumna, Portumna Retirement Village, Portumna Social Services Day Care Centre, Portumna Active Retirement, Mental Health Services, Youthreach Portumna and Portumna Arts Group, with a core team of volunteers assisting Alison throughout. The project involved making a diamond shaped mosaic for the overall geometric design. Patterns used were selected by participants from everyday items. Every full, half & quarter diamond shape was pieced together to form a seamless design a bit like a giant mosaic patchwork quilt. The mosaic made from Mexican smalti, a luxury handmade glass material, is now installed and surrounds the entrance to Portumna Library.
Alison Mac Cormaic is an experienced community arts educator and has completed a number of Arts Council and County Council funded projects, as well as making her own artwork. www.alisonmaccomaic.com |
