Lens By The Lake
Café Gallery, Portumna Castle | 10am - 5pm
Lens by the Lake is a collection of images from Michael Molamphy depicting flora, fauna and lakeshore life taken over several years in a quiet corner of Lough Derg in County Tipperary. All photographs were taken within a one-mile radius of an area known as Skehanagh, Coolbawn and focus on the beauty found in the common flowers, birds and lakeshore scenes.
Michael Molamphy received his first camera at the age of 12. He was immediately consumed by the potential of a photograph to draw attention to a specific detail or to tell a particular story. This fascination has remained with him throughout his life, from setting up a darkroom in the 80’s to developing the possibilities of digital photography in recent years.
Having spent 35 years teaching at second level, 28 of which were based in Portumna, Michael took early retirement in 2018 to pursue this interest fulltime, in the process setting up Coolbawn Cross Photography. Particularly interested in nature and the River Shannon, most of Michael’s photographs are taken along the lakeshore or in the fields and hedgerows around where he lives in Coolbawn.
The exhibition contains over 30 images, printed on canvas. In addition, a video installation features a spectacular starling murmuration on Lough Derg. A second screen depicts a collection of close-up images, revealing the amazing hidden beauty found in wildflowers and common weeds, often missed by the naked eye.
