“Everything interesting begins with one person and one place”:
John McGahern’s insights into Irish life with Prof. Tom Inglis

John McGahern provided a rich, thick description of everyday life in rural Ireland. Through his writings, we get a feel for the people and the culture and landscape in which they lived. In this informal talk, Prof. Inglis will focus on some key episodes that provide an understanding of the emotional entanglements between male neighbours, the struggle for power between men of status, the battles between fathers and sons and the fragile relationship between men and women.

This event is moderated by writer and critic, Niall MacMonagle. Prof. Tom Inglis is a sociologist who came to live in McGahern land ten years ago. Most of his writings have been about Irish culture and society. His book Unbecoming Catholic: Being Religious in Contemporary Ireland was published in March. As well as having written about McGahern, he has used McGahern’s work as a means of understanding social and cultural life in Ireland. He is the Academic Director of the John McGahern Barracks Museum in Cootehall.
